UConn Lacrosse Announces Alumni Day April 7th

UConn Men's Lacrosse is proud to announce that April 7th will be the first ever Men's Lacrosse Alumni Day. The Alumni Day will kick off at 4pm with the 'Old Huskies Game' at Depot Field. The Old Huskies Game will pit odd year graduates on one team vs. even year graduates on the other. Following the game an alumni gathering will be held at a to be determined location. At the conclusion of the evening all alumni are invited to support the team as they take on Northeastern in a 7pm match up at Depot Field.

John O'Leary Named Assistant Coach

John O’Leary has joined the UConn Men's Lacrosse team for 2011-12 after two seasons as offensive coordinator at Bacon Academy. O’Leary was a three-year starter on attack at Saint Anselm College, compiling 92 goals and 127 points in his career placing him fifth all-time.

A standout player, O’Leary led Saint Anselm to their best season on record his junior year when the team went 11-3. The Hawks advanced to their first ever NE-10 Conference Final Four
appearance that same season. He was a two-time NE-10 All-Conference selection and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business from Saint Anselm along with an MBA in International Business
Development from the University of Hartford.

Upon graduation, O’Leary founded Silver Sound lacrosse along with his brother. Their team
has competed in the Glastonbury Lacrosse tournament as well as the Lake Placid tournament in
recent years. Silver Sounds has won three Glastonbury tournament championships (2005, 2008
and 2009).

He has also served as head coach for the north squad twice in the Nutmeg State Games leading
players from Glastonbury, Newington and West Hartford to the Silver and Bronze medals. In
the summer O’Leary is still active, playing in summer leagues and various tournaments. In 2004
he won the PVLL with the Glastonbury Whalers and still plays with the team every summer.

O’Leary comes from a strong family of lacrosse: his younger brother, Brian, was also a two-time
NE-10 All-Conference selection on attack at Saint Anselm College who remains the all-time
leader in assists with 152 and is second in career points with 210.

O’Leary is an adjunct faculty member at Goodwin College and currently resides in Glastonbury
with his wife Sarah.

Men's Lacrosse 2012 Schedule Released

Following an impressive fall season the UConn Men's Lacrosse team is proud to announce their Spring 2012 schedule. The Huskies will start the season with several match-ups against PCLL Division 2 opponents including New Haven, WPI and the programs first ever game against the University of Maine. UConn will then travel south for several out-of-conference game against SELC teams Wake Forest, NC State, and Virginia Tech. After returning from the south the Huskies will finish off their season against PCLL conference opponents, highlighted by home games against #8 Boston College and #13 Buffalo.

UConn Defeats Coast Guard in Fall Matchup

The UConn Men's Lacrosse team hosted the United States Coast Guard Academy today at Sherman Field in what was the Huskies first competition of the 2011-2012 school year. UConn started strong and held a 4-1 lead after the first quarter, and ultimately took a 9-2 lead at the half. Scoring was spread out among the Huskies offense, with 2011 PCLL Rookie of the Year Kevin Canavan leading the team with two goals. For the second half head coach Paul Scordato was able to rest the UConn starters and empty the bench for the remainder of the game, which concluded with a score of 9-4 in favor of the Huskies. After the game the UConn players and parents held a post-game luncheon and treated the Coast Guard players as a thank you for their service to our nation. The Huskies next face Bridgewater State 10/8 at 4pm on Depot Field.

UConn Men's Lacrosse Announces Paul Scordato as Head Coach

Storrs, CT - The University of Connecticut Men's Lacrosse program is proud to announce the hiring of Paul Scordato as the program's new head coach. Coach Scordato brings with him to Storrs over 30 years of coaching experience ranging from the youth level to NCAA Division II.

A native of Westchester, NY, Scordato was a two-time captain and first team All-County defenseman for Lakeland/Panas High School. Upon completing high school he attended the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, where he studied Marine Engineering and was a two-time captain for the Buccaneers Men's Lacrosse program, as well as team MVP and conference MVP his Senior year.

After graduating from college Scordato took the position of Assistant Lacrosse Coach at the University of New Haven, which at the time was an NCAA Division II program. In the two years prior to Scordato's arrival, the New Haven program had a record of 4-18, and the “sport's future was in doubt” according to the New Haven Charger Bulletin. However, thanks to his efforts the Chargers turned the program around, and he eventually would be promoted to Head Coach for the 1981 season. During his next three years as UNH Head Coach, Scordato would post a 22-14 record, and secure a postseason berth in 1983. Scordato's tenure at UNH brought the program impressive wins over Division I programs St. Johns, Vermont, UConn, Fairfield, Hartford and Marist, as well as victories over Division III powers Williams, Trinity and Wesleyan.

Scordato left New Haven after the '83 season to work in the private sector, but his involvement in lacrosse was far from over. He would remain involved in the Connecticut Valley Lacrosse Club over the next six years as both a player and Head Coach, and he would also play for the Western Massachusetts Lacrosse Club. The 90's would begin Scordato's involvement with lacrosse in Somers, CT, where he held the position of Somers Lacrosse Association President for 10 years and also coached in the Connecticut Nutmeg State Games. More recently, and before coming to UConn, Scordato, who currently resides in Ellington, CT, was involved in coaching in the Ellington Public School system at both the middle school and high school level.

Canavan PCLL Rookie of the Year, Five Huskies Named to All-Conference Team

Kevin Canavan was named PCLL Rookie of the Year and Five Huskies were named to the 2011 Pioneer Collegiate Lacrosse League All-Conference Team. Canavan was also named to the 1st Team as a midfielder along with Senior Captain Peter Gabriele who was named 1st Team Goaltender for the 2nd year in a row. Zach Rubin, Derek Flynn and Steve Kirkwood were also named to the team as honorable mentions.

In addition to individual awards the 2011 team set some personal statistical records. Since UConn's affiliation with the MCLA (then USLIA) in 2000, Kevin Canavan is now the all time leader in: PPG (Career), Goals (Season), Points (Season), PPG (Season). Peter Gabriele is now the leader in: Save % (Career), Saves (Season), Save % (Season). Charles Ogalin, Tim Palko, and Ryan Perkins also entered the top 3 in various statistical catagories. UConn Ends Regular Season with a "W"

Storrs, CT- The Huskies closed out their regular season with a win against URI at Depot Field on Saturday. Not only was it Senior Day, but this was a huge game for the Huskies as well, with a spot in the playoffs up for grabs. The Huskies found the back of the net first with a goal from Zach Rubin. The Rams were able to score before the end of the first to make it 2-1 UConn. Shortly into the second quarter, the Rams scored to make the score 3-2, but that would be as close as they would get. With great team defense and a 14 save outing for Senior Peter Gabriele, the Huskies were able to hold the Rams scoreless until late in the 4^th. Sophomore Kevin Canavan continued to produce, scoring a team high 3 goals, bringing his season total to 31. Zach Rubin scored two goals, while Senior Allen Rickard tallied his first goal of the season. Senior Defensemen Stephen Kirkwood added a goal on a great one man effort. The Huskies got a lot of contribution from their seniors, both Anthony Marchitto and Mason Banwell had assists, as well as Senior Ryan Perkins. With the win the Huskies moved up to the fourth seed in the tournament, giving them home field advantage in the quarter finals. Coincidentally UConn’s first round game will be against URI on Wednesday at Depot Field. The time is still to be determined.

UConn Opens Season at Volunteer Invitational

March 27, 2011- The University of Connecticut’s Men Lacrosse team opened their season this past weekend in Memphis, TN in the Volunteer Invitational. It was a great opportunity for not only the team, but the UConn program, which has never made a trip like this in its history. The Huskies were one of four teams invited to the tournament along with Indiana University, Texas A&M, and the University of Tennessee.

The season opener was Friday against Texas A&M, and it was clear the Huskies had not played a game. They struggled against the seasoned Aggies and limped to a disappointing 14-7 loss. However, the Huskies were able to regroup and salvage the weekend. Saturday’s game was against Indiana University and the Huskies came out with lots of intensity. UConn fell behind 2-0 early in the first quarter, but found their groove and came back with a 10-0 run, going into halftime with a 10-2 lead. Indiana opened the quarter again with two quick goals to close the lead to 6, but that would be as close as they would get, as UConn went on another 10-0 run to close out the game with a 20-4 win. Junior Zack Rubin had four goals and four assists while Sophomore Kevin Canavan tied a game high with five goals, while adding an assist. Junior Charles Ogalin also had five goals and three assists while Sophomore Mike Horne and Junior Mike Malara added two goals each. Junior Henry Peterson had a goal of his own and two assists, with Senior Karl Hueglin closing out the scoring with a goal. The defense, led by Senior Stephen Kirkwood and Senior goalie Peter Gabriele were able to hold the Hoosiers to 4 goals, their lowest of the season. Peter Gabriele made 8 saves in the game.

Sunday’s game was much more exciting and much closer than the previous two. The Huskies were able to open up a 2-0 lead early in the first, the lead was cut to 2-1 when a Tennessee pass was tipped by a defender and trickled into the net. The scoring slowed down for a could part of the first, then with .1 seconds left on the clock Zack Rubin ripped a lefty shot and sniped the bottom right corner to give the Huskies a 3-1 lead at the end of the first. Both team’s defenses began to play well, each team allowing only one goal each in the 2^nd quarter, giving UConn a 4-2 lead at half. The Volunteers answered quickly in the third quarter, tying the game at four all. The fourth quarter was back and forth, neither team being able to pull away from the other. The Huskies had one last attempt at the end of the fourth to win it, but the shot was wide. Into overtime it went, where Junior middie Derek Flynn won the faceoff and drew a flag to give the Huskies a crucial man-up opportunity. UConn was able to take advantage as Kevin Canavan put home a lefty rip, his fourth of the day, to win the game for the Huskies. Senior Tim Palko also scored for the Huskies, as well as Zack Rubin and Charles Ogalin. Sophomore LSM Jake Bradeen also scored, giving him his second of the season. The defense was also able to play quite well against Tennessee, holding the Volunteers to 2 of 8 on man-up opportunities, two of which were two men down for the Huskies. Peter Gabriele made 11 saves on the day. It capped off a great weekend for the Huskies, giving them great momentum at the start of the season.

The Huskies had been waiting all semester for this tournament to come, and the outcome couldn’t have been much better. The Huskies(2-1) now turn their attention to conference play with a week to prepare for their first PCLL game against Northeastern University at Parsons Field in Boston, MA on April 5^th.

This spring the Huskies have matchups against 3 nationally ranked teams (vs. #4 Colorado, #13 Boston College, and #22 New Hampshire). Additionally, UConn will travel to Memphis, TN to compete against Texas A & M, Tennessee, and Indiana. The team will host up to 7 home games this spring (WPI and URI times/locations still TBD). UConn Ranked 5th in PCLL Preseason Poll

The Pioneer Collegiate Lacrosse League recently held their fall meeting and released their Pre-Season Coaches Poll.

The University of Buffalo will be joining the PCLL and Southern Connecticut State University will be playing its first year in the PCLL Division II this spring. SCSU were voted in at the last Spring meeting after playing a provisional season against PCLL opponents.

The PCLL will also be reviewing and re-writing their by-laws to be more specific and current.

“There weren’t really any surprises in the rankings,” said PCLL Commissioner Ben Clark. “In Division I, seeing Boston College on top is nothing new, and in Division II, Briarcliffe is coming off a great year, returning most of their players. However, there’s a lot more parity in the league than meets the eye. Top to bottom, the PCLL is a very deep conference in both divisions. I don’t think there’s ever a conference game where one coach thinks to himself, ‘This will be an easy win.’”

Clark also stated, “It’s always been a challenge for us to get out of conference games, but it’s getting easier and easier every year as coaches around the country are starting to realize the level of talent that resides in the PCLL. For example, Colorado is coming to New England in April to play BC, UNH, and UCONN. Also, Texas State is making a trip here in the spring. BC is also playing Michigan and Michigan State, and UNH is traveling to Arizona to play Arizona State, Santa Clara, and Wisconsin.”

UConn Set to Take on #24 UNH, Follow The Game Live

In a game ripe with playoff implications the UConn Men's Lacrosse team will take on the #24 nationally ranked New Hampshire Wildcats this Saturday 4/17 at 4pm. With two close one goal loses to PCLL powers Boston College and Northeastern UConn looks to get it's first statement win of the season and set itself up for a playoff run. This year the Huskies have been carried by Junior Goalie Peter Gabriele who currently has the highest save percentage in the PCLL and is #2 nationally in the MCLA. UConn Defeats Boston University In PCLL Opener

(Boston, MA) The UConn Men’s Lacrosse team started conference play this past Friday when the Huskies traveled to Nickerson Field to play the Boston University Terriers. The Huskies started the game off by scoring the first two goals. Freshman Charlie Ogalin had his first career goal as he fired a shot into an open net, while another newcomer, Freshmen Zach Rubin also buried one in the back of the net, with an assist going to Charlie Ogalin.

The Terriers then scored on a man-up opportunity to make it 2-1. Sophomore Sean Murphy scored in the second quarter to make it 3-1 and Sophomore Travis Church added another to make it 4-1. The Terriers got another man-up goal in the second quarter. The half ended with the Huskies leading 4-2, and that would be the end of the scoring for the Terriers.

The beginning of the second half started off the same as the first half, but soon the Huskies found their groove and started rolling. The Huskies riding game was particularly well, forcing several dropped passes and turnovers, including one that Junior Mason Banwell scooped up and hit an open Charlie Ogalin for his second goal of the night. With man-up goals from Senior Wes Downing, and another two from Zach Rubin, the Huskies were able to increase their lead and never let go.

The defense for the Huskies played particularly well, helping Junior goalie Peter Gabriele keep the Terriers shooters at bay. After giving up two goals early on in man down situations the Huskies defense tightened up, giving up no goals in the second half. The win was a big one for the Huskies, improving their record to 2-0, but more importantly, starting conference play off with a win. The Huskies travel to WPI on Tuesday, March 30th and then host conference foe Northeastern at Sherman Field at 8 pm on April 2nd.

Unfortunately, the University's support of our team is limited, as we are not an NCAA affiliated team, so we are left to operate as an organization which receives less support from the university as compared to other teams. We are seeking the support of our friends, fans and local businesses to assist us in running our program.

The University of Connecticut Men's Lacrosse team competes in the MCLA, Division A. The MCLA is the largest lacrosse league in the world, comprising of nearly 200 teams nation wide. We are dedicated to taking the University of Connecticut Men's Lacrosse Team to a national level this year, but we need financial backing. We hope to raise enough money to curb our annual expenses, travel costs for the season, and costs for attending the national tournament.

Sherman Field

The University of Connecticut Men's Lacrosse team utilizes the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex, a $3.7 million athletic facility located adjacent to Memorial Stadium and the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion in the heart of UConn's main campus in Storrs.
Opened in the 1995-96, academic year, the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex features a state-of-the-art artificial turf field (nylon knit on elastic layer over a vertical drain base), giving UConn one of the finest on-campus collegiate facilities in the nation. The complex also includes an eight-lane, 400-meter all-weather track surface as well as seating for 2,000 fans, full-field lighting, a press box, and a scoreboard with electronic message ability.

Coming from the North-
Traveling south on 195; when you arrive at the University take a right on
North Eagleville Rd (a church will be on your right). Continue down this
road until you hit a traffic light at a four way intersection. At this light take
a left onto Hillside Rd. Continue down this road, through several stop signs,
you will eventually see Gampel Pavilion on you're right side (dome),
take you're immediate right after Gampel. This road will take you to several
parking options within walking distance of the field, including a parking
garage on your left. On foot follow the road behind Gampel to the Sherman
Complex.

Coming from the South-

Traveling north on 195; take a left on Mansfield Rd (right after the art and
music building on your left). Follow this road until you reach a stop sign,
take a left here on Gilbert Rd. Go to the end of Gilbert and take a right onto
Hillside Rd. Continue down Hillside until you see Gampel Pavilion (dome), take
the left before Gampel. This road will take you to several
parking options within walking distance of the field, including a parking
garage on your left. The right behind Gampel will take you directly to the Sherman Complex.

Bus Parking for the Sherman Complex
Buses should take the right that goes behind Gampel, to drop players off. The
immediate road after the football facilities building (brick) should provide space for bus parking, assuring passing cars have room. Otherwise buses can park in X-lot right down the hill from Sherman Field.

Greer Field House

From January until early March the UConn Men's Lacrosse team can often be found practicing in the Greer Field House. The arena is named after former Husky basketball player, coach and Athletic Director, Hugh S. Greer. It was remodeled in 1996-97 following the departure of the basketball teams to become a full-time indoor track facility.

Depot Field
Depot Field lies on UConn's Depot Campus at the north west edge of it's main campus. Depot Field's two grass fields serve as the Huskies primary practice field as well as a secondary or backup game field.
Travel on Rt. 195 for approx. 10-15min to the 195 -Rt. 44Junction. (commonly
known as "Four Corners") Take a right onto Rt. 44 You will pass a Bank of America and Villa Spirits almost immediately. (If coming from the south go past the campus until meeting Rt44). Continue on 44 approx. 1 mile past "Villa Spiritsf" on Right. After you go up a long hill, take a left on the street just before the greenhouse. You will see the Field on the right. Bear hard right. (parking i s located across the street from the field). The field is on Bone Mill Road.

This past week the PCLL released their 2009 All-Conference team, which included three Huskies, plus three Honorable Mentions. The highest honor received by a Husky was 1st Team LSM, awarded to Junior Captain John Sippel (Trumbull, CT). A pair of UConn players were honored with 2nd team awards as well; Senior Captain Brandon Pepe (Orange, CT) and Senior Captain Tim Murphy (Framington, CT).

Three Huskies were also given Honorable Mentions; Junior Attack Wes Downing (Glastonbury, CT), Sophomore Midfielder Tim Palko (Trumbull, CT) and Junior Defender Nick Avergrinos (Sudbury, MA).

Head Coach - Paul Scordato

A native of Westchester,NY, Scordato was a two-time captain and first team All-County defenseman for Lakeland/Panas High School. Upon completing high school he attended the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, where he studied Marine Engineering and was a two-time captain for the Buccaneers Men's Lacrosse program, as well as team MVP and conference MVP his Senior year.

After graduating from college Scordato took the position of Assistant Lacrosse Coach at the University of New Haven, which at the time was an NCAA Division II program. In the two years prior to Scordato's arrival, the New Haven program had a record of 4-18, and the “sport's future was in doubt” according to the New Haven Charger Bulletin. However, thanks to his efforts the Chargers turned the program around, and he eventually would be promoted to Head Coach for the 1981 season. During his next three years as UNH Head Coach, Scordato would post a 22-14 record, and secure a postseason berth in 1983. Scordato's tenure at UNH brought the program impressive wins over Division I programs St. Johns, Vermont, UConn, Fairfield, Hartford and Marist, as well as victories over Division III powers Williams, Trinity and Wesleyan.

Scordato left New Haven after the '83 season to work in the private sector, but his involvement in lacrosse was far from over. He would remain involved in the Connecticut Valley Lacrosse Club over the next six years as both a player and Head Coach, and he would also play for the Western Massachusetts Lacrosse Club. The 90's would begin Scordato's involvement with lacrosse in Somers, CT, where he held the position of Somers Lacrosse Association President for 10 years and also coached in the Connecticut Nutmeg State Games. More recently, and before coming to UConn, Scordato, who currently resides in Ellington, CT, was involved in coaching in the Ellington Public School system at both the middle school and high school level.

Assistant Coach John O'Leary

John O’Leary has joined the UConn Men's Lacrosse team for 2011-12 after two seasons as offensive coordinator at Bacon Academy. O’Leary was a three-year starter on attack at Saint Anselm College, compiling 92 goals and 127 points in his career placing him fifth all-time.

A standout player, O’Leary led Saint Anselm to their best season on record his junior year when the team went 11-3. The Hawks advanced to their first ever NE-10 Conference Final Four appearance that same season. He was a two-time NE-10 All-Conference selection and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business from Saint Anselm along with an MBA in International Business Development from the University of Hartford.

Upon graduation, O’Leary founded Silver Sound lacrosse along with his brother. Their team
has competed in the Glastonbury Lacrosse tournament as well as the Lake Placid tournament in
recent years. Silver Sounds has won three Glastonbury tournament championships (2005, 2008
and 2009).

He has also served as head coach for the north squad twice in the Nutmeg State Games leading
players from Glastonbury, Newington and West Hartford to the Silver and Bronze medals. In
the summer O’Leary is still active, playing in summer leagues and various tournaments. In 2004
he won the PVLL with the Glastonbury Whalers and still plays with the team every summer.

O’Leary comes from a strong family of lacrosse: his younger brother, Brian, was also a two-time
NE-10 All-Conference selection on attack at Saint Anselm College who remains the all-time
leader in assists with 152 and is second in career points with 210.

O’Leary is an adjunct faculty member at Goodwin College and currently resides in Glastonbury
with his wife Sarah.

Huskies get votes in national poll, place 3rd regionally

This past week the LaxWorld MCLA Division 1 Preseason Top 25 Poll was released. The 2007 National Champion BYU Cougars were atop the poll followed by Colorado State and California Santa Barbara. Falling within the Top 10 were PCLL powerhouses Boston College (#7) and Northeastern (#10). UConn and New Hampshire both received votes but did not fall within the Top 25. Regionally, in the PCLL Preseason Poll, UConn placed 3rd behind BC and Northeastern. The Huskies begin their 2008 campaign on the road vs. BU on March 21st, and will host their home opener vs. The University of Buffalo on March 28th.

Huskies Start Off 2007 Season Strong

Halfway through their 2007 campaign, the UConn Men’s Lacrosse team is on top of their conference with a 5-0 record. One of the brightest spots for the Huskies this year has been their stingy defense. Led by Senior Captain Jon Pawelk (Cheshire, CT), the team has held opponents to an average of 4.4 goals against. Juniors Mike Perkins (Trumbull, CT), and Greg Adams (Glastonbury, CT) as well as Freshman Nick Avgerinos (Sudburry, MA) have also contributed to the Huskies strong defense. The UConn defense also owes a great deal of their success to Sophomore Goalie Brandon Pepe (Orange, CT). Pepe has picked up where he left off last season with strong play in the crease, and is currently leading the league in save percentage at .807.

The Huskies strong start can be credited to several factors, including a strong freshman class and several NCAA transfers. With transfers from Bryant, Sacred Heart, Springfield, and Ithaca, the Huskies are at no shortage for talent. Sophomores John Schwamb (Westchester, NY), and J.P. Conolly (Simsbury, CT), as well as Junior Steve Zirolli (South Windsor, CT) have all made instant impacts. Along with returners Brian Skelcher (Hamden, CT) and Owen O’Connor (Sudbury, MA) the Huskies are fielding one of their best, and deepest offenses in years.

With games against traditional powers New Hampshire, Boston College, and Northeastern just around the corner, the Huskies will have their hands full in the coming weeks. These games will be a tough test for the young UConn squad, and a telling sign of just how far they may go this year.

Giving Back to the Game

Eight years after coming to this country from Croatia, it appeared as if Dino Mattessich would always compete on a track. Fortunately for the lacrosse world, his time as a hurdler and pole vaulter would be limited. At the end of his freshman year at Freeport High School on Long Island, N.Y., his track coach told him that he was not good enough to make the varsity team and suggested that he give lacrosse a try.

“The first lacrosse game I ever saw was the first game I played in. I didn’t know anything about the sport. I didn’t quite understand the offside rule and I just stopped at every line on the field until my coach told me to keep going,” Mattessich reminisced.

But he caught on quickly and in no time he was playing at the University of Maryland and winning the 1973 NCAA National Championship.

“I have been very fortunate to be influenced by some very good coaches who taught me a lot about the game. Dick Finley, an All-American at Syracuse [University], was my high school coach. He taught me the fundamentals and, more importantly, how to compete. Hall of Famer Bud Beardmore was my coach at Maryland. As a lacrosse strategist, he was ahead of his time and will be remembered as one of the best to coach the game. I learned the importance of organization and preparation from Coach Beardmore,” the former captain of the Terrapins said.

Graduating from Maryland with a bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1974, Mattessich returned to Long Island to put all of the lessons he had learned into his own coaching career. Starting with the junior varsity team at Manhasset High School, he then moved on to the college level: first at the University of Baltimore, then at his alma mater, the University of Maryland. He spent three years at the helm of the Terrapins and then he decided to leave the sidelines in 1983 and pursue a career in college athletics administration.

“When I accepted the coaching opportunities presented to me, it was always with the idea that I would eventually move toward an administrative career. I was fortunate to get into college coaching at a very young age, have some success and gain experience that would later be very valuable in my administrative roles,” he said.

After 12 years as an Assistant Athletic Director at Towson University and six years at the University of Maine, Mattessich came to Storrs, Conn., in 2001 to join the University of Connecticut Athletic Department.

Currently the Senior Associate Athletic Director, Mattessich returned to lacrosse last year, coaching the men’s club team at UConn. “I did it to spend time with my son, Brian [a senior on the team], and to give the kids a good experience. The kids were great and the lacrosse was pretty good. I got hooked,” he said.

Under Mattessich’s guidance, the 4-9 Huskies transformed into a 9-3 nationally ranked team playing in the Pioneer Collegiate Lacrosse League semifinals, a feat that was recognized by the PCLL when they named Mattessich the 2006 Coach of the Year.

Although his son, a third team All-Conference selection last year, has graduated, Mattessich continues to coach. Not for fame or glory, but, he simply explained, “to give back to the game and to make a difference in the lives of young men who really enjoy the game.”

Maryland Lacrosse Photo Inspires Canadian Stamp

In conjunction with the opening of the World Lacrosse Championship this Thursday in London, Ontario, the Canadian postal service has issued a 51-cent stamp that honors the sport that was declared the nation’s official summer sport by Parliament in 1994.

The inspiration for the action-filled stamp, designed by Tom Yakobina and illustrated by Yvan Meunier, is based on a photograph not of a Canadian lacrosse game but one between the Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland.

“I wanted the stamp design to be suggestive of a poster advertising the Championships,” said Yakobina in a recent interview with Canada’s Stamp Details, a quarterly magazine published by Canada Post, the country’s postal service.

On the stamp, the figure in red holding the lacrosse stick is Dino A. Mattessich, who went on to serve as head lacrosse coach at Maryland from 1980 to 1983, and was assistant athletic director at Towson University from 1983 to 1995.

From 1995 to 2001, he was at the University of Maine, and for the last five years Mattessich has been assistant athletic director at the University of Connecticut at Storrs.

“How do I feel about being on a stamp? That’s a good one, however, it really is very flattering,” said Mattessich, 53, in a telephone interview yesterday from North Carolina, where he was vacationing.

Huskies Place Four on PCLL All-Conference Team

Post Season Awards and 2007 Captains Announced

The UConn Men's Lacrosse team announced their 2007 captains as well as highlighted individual efforts with several post season awards this past week. Next year the Huskies will have four captains, a first for the program. Senior Attackmen Ryan Scordato (Ellington, CT) coming off a career season (20G 4A) will lead the UConn attack next year. Senior Midfielder Mike Landry, (Belmont, MA) a vocal and emotional player, will also help lead the Husky offense. Senior Jon
Pawelk (Cheshire, CT), the Huskies top Defensman and an All-Conference player, will anchor the defense with the help of Junior Defenseman Greg Adams (Glastonbury, CT).

Last week, the Huskies defeated Worcester Polytechnic Institute 19 – 3 on Wednesday before upsetting No. 19 Northeastern 8 – 7 in triple overtime on Friday evening.

Freshman Justin Oliver (Mystic, CT) scored the game winning goal on a bounce shot to win the Northeastern game. Oliver finished the contest with a game high 4 goals. Freshman goalie Brandon Pepe (Orange, CT) added 15 saves, limiting Northeastern to only 1 goal after the half.

UConn Head Coach Dino Mattessich has an extensive background in the sport. The former head coach of the University of Baltimore and the University of Maryland, Mattesich is now the Associate Athletic Director at UConn.

“Northeastern is a good team with great players. We were fortunate to win the game. Our team is not overly talented, but we are fundamentally sound. We don’t beat ourselves. We do things by a committee and play with a lot of grit and determination,” said Mattessich.

UConn has now posted 7 consecutive victories to earn their first ranking of the season in the Shamrock Top 25 poll. The win streak is the teams’ longest since 2001. The Huskies are No. 25 in the rankings that were announced this past Wednesday on USLIA.com.

“We are very pleased about our season. Last year, we were 4 – 9. 7 – 1 is a tremendous turnaround,” noted Mattesich. “In both of our one-goal wins (BU and Northeastern); we were down the whole game. Our keeper made some big saves down the stretch to give us a chance to win at the end.”

The former Division 1 varsity coach also discussed the rapid growth of the MDIA.

“The growth of the MDIA is a double edged sword. It gives club guys a chance to play, but it allows some schools an out. The game is obviously growing all over the country, but intercollegiate (varsity) lacrosse is not growing. However, I’m really impressed with the talent at this level. It’s a good league with great players and it’s a great experience for everyone involved,” said Mattesich.

UConn plays its two final Pioneer Collegiate Lacrosse League (PCLL) games this week. The Huskies host Boston College on Friday night. The game is crucial to the PCLL Division A tournament seedings. Next Tuesday (4/25), UConn will face Rhode Island on the road. The team is jockeying for final positioning for the upcoming PCLL playoffs, April 27-30 at Worcester, Mass.

“The top two seeds get first round byes. Finishing (the regular season) with two more wins is huge,” added Mattesich.

For their efforts last week, UConn Lacrosse wins a prize pack from Riddell Lacrosse including one Riddell Lacrosse Helmet customized in Connecticut colors.

Huskies continue winning ways stun #19 Northeastern in 3 OT

On a dreary and wet night the UConn Men's Lacrosse team battled for four quarters and three overtimes to defeat nationally ranked Northeastern. After coming out slow in the first half and trailing by up to 3 goals the Huskies came alive in the second half out shooting NU 21-9. In the third OT Freshman Justin Oliver (Mystic, CT) swept hard from up top and bounced a shot into goal to win the game. Freshman goalie Brandon Pepe (Orange, CT) had an outstanding game between the pipes with 15 saves, holding NU to 1 goal after the half. UConn is now 7-1 in the PCLL and tied for first place. This is UConn's first ever win versus a national ranked opponent.

The 2006 UConn Men's Lacrosse team has gotten off to one of the best starts in team history, including a six game win streak, the longest since the Huskies won seven in a row in 2001. UConn (5-1/6-1) will face off against PCLL powerhouse Northeastern (6-0/9-1) this Friday night at the Sherman Turf Complex. The teams are 2-2 all time in PCLL play, but Connecticut has not defeated NU since an overtime victory in 2002. The game will be moved to Depot Field in the case of inclement weather.

An emotionally charged UConn team traveled to face ex head coach Chuck Little and the Bridgewater State Bears this past Sunday. UConn showed early that they were there to make a statement and took a 6-0 lead after the first quarter, capped by a buzzer shot from midfield by Defenseman Greg Adams (Glastonbury, CT) which deflected off a BSC player and into the goal. At the half the Huskies had a 13-0 lead and had held BSC to 3 shots. The game would conclude with UConn on top 23-6.

Lacrosse Alumni to Direct UConn Football Operations

2003 UConn Lacrosse Alumni Jon Dahlquist has been named the Director of Football Operations for the University of Connecticut Division of Athletics. Dahlquist captained the team for two years, as a Junior in 2002 and as a Senior in 2003. He was a Second Team All-PCLL player in both his Junior and Senior year.

STORRS, Conn. (Feb. 20, 2006) — University of Connecticut head football coach Randy Edsall announced on Monday the hiring of Jon Dahlquist as Director of Football Operations.

“It's great to have Jon come back to the program,” Edsall says. “He did an outstanding when he was here before and, with his added experience, he will contribute even more to the program. His high level of familiarity will make the transition a very smooth one for all involved.”

Dahlquist worked as an operations and recruiting assistant at UConn throughout his academic career, learning the trade from former UConn Director of Football Operations Don Corzine, now a scout for the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals. From 2001-05, Dahlquist extensively helped Corzine in areas of UConn’s operation ranging from team travel to the organization of recruiting visits. He was involved with the large logistical operations behind the team’s week-long stay in Detroit for the 2004 Motor City Bowl, the program’s first-ever bowl trip.

Last spring, Dahlquist worked in Tampa with the operations branch of NFL Europe’s Berlin Thunder as they prepared for the 2005 season. He managed all daily football operations during the team’s camp, ranging from room assignments to bus schedules to meal counts. He helped make passport arrangements for Thunder players and managed league financial matters, including player per diem and reimbursements.

Dahlquist volunteered during the fall of 2005 as the Football Operations Director at the College of the Holy Cross in his native Worcester, Mass. He coordinated aspects of the Crusaders’ team travel, organized recruiting receptions and assisted in community service events.

He also gained experience while an undergraduate in Storrs as a manager for the UConn men’s basketball team from 1999-2002 and played on the school’s club men’s lacrosse team. Dahlquist was a two-year team captain and was named All-Pioneer League as both a junior and senior. He was also active off-campus during his undergraduate years, serving as an intern in the development office at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and as a marketing intern for the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack.

Dahlquist received two degrees from UConn, a bachelor’s degree in Education in May of 2003 and a master’s degree in Education in May of 2005.

Two Huskies named to All-Conference Team

(Storrs, CT) Two players from the University of Connecticut Men's Lacrosse team were honored with All-Conference awards this past week. Senior Defenseman Amit Ghadiyali (Norwalk, CT) and Sophomore Midfielder Paul Prizio (Brookline, CT) were both awarded 2nd Team honors. Ghadiyali, a graduate of Brien McMahon, and transfer from Eastern Connecticut State has been the Huskies defensive backbone since last year. This is his second All-PCLL award. Prizio, a workhorse midfielder and the Huskies most consistent ground ball man led the team in several statistical categories, as well as reaching second place for the team record for goals in a year.

The University of Connecticut Men's Lacrosse team released its 2005 spring schedule this week. The Huskies begin their '05 campaign on March 5th in Clemson, SC when they face off against the Clemson Tigers. UConn's newest head coach Chuck Little has been involved in lacrosse for well over a decade. A 1989 Ithaca graduate, Little had been the head lacrosse coach at New Bedford (Mass.) High School since 1996. He has also served as an assistant coach at several area colleges, including Roger Williams University, UMass Dartmouth, and Mass Maritime.

(Storrs, CT) Four players from the University of Connecticut Men's Lacrosse team were honored with All-League awards this past week. Two of those four, Senior Captain Dave Salemme (Cheshire, CT) and Junior Defensemen Amit Ghadiyali (Norwalk, CT) were awarded 1st Team honors. Salemme was among the team leaders in several statistical catagories, and was a staple in the teams offense. Ghadiyali was the backbone of Uconns strong defense which was among the leagues best.
The two other Huskies honored were Freshman Attackmen Jeff Keegan (Norwalk, CT) and Senior Attackman Adam Ivans (Huntington, NY). Keegan, whom led the Huskies in assists and was one of teams most explosive attackmen, was named 2nd Team All-League. UConn Falls to Stonehill in PCLL Playoffs

The #4 Seeded University of Connecticut was defeated by the #5 seeded Stonehill College 7-3 in the first round of the PCLL playoffs located in Durham, NH. Uconn's offense was shut down for most of the game while the teams defense tried to keep the game close, but ultimately gave in to the Chieftains attack in the 4th quarter.

UConn finished it's regular season with a victory over CCSU 10-2. The team finishes with a 3rd place league ranking and a 7-3 PCLL record. They head to New Hampshire this weekend to battle for a bid to the USLIA National Tournament in St. Louis.

A penalty-riddled second half ended Uconn's chance for a victory at the University of Pittsburgh. The Huskies came out with a strong showing in the first half, and played to a 4-4 half-time tie. (Worcestor, MA) Uconn avenged their overtime loss of last year by downing the Holy Cross Club Team 11-4, evening up their record at 2-2. Coach Davis was extremely proud of the win. "We played very well. The offense is beginning to learn control and the defense solidified a bit since the Va Tech game. We got a lot of young guys in for some valuable experience tonight. I was especially happy
with the play of Scott Apelgren (Simsbury, CT), who played extended minutes following the early ejection of Pat Higgins. Our two goalies also had solid games. Both Pete King (Bedford, MA) and John Carlin (Fair Lawn, NJ) played well; recording 5 and 7 saves respectively."

However, the Huskies played a far from perfect game. As coach Davis explains, the Huskies struggled on man-up, only going 2 for 6, and also struggled on face offs.

"We did not run our EMO properly. I would like to have about a 70% success rate on man-ups. I don't understand why, but the EMO was not playing as a team. They appeared to expect a shot after only one pass. We luckily did not need these goals, but we must correct the problem before we head into the meat of our season. As for face offs, we only won 7 of 16. We dominated the first quarter 4-1, but after our starting face off middie Jay Knott (Ashland, MA) had to go to the hospital due to a shoulder injury early in the second period, we struggled."

No. 23 Georgia Tech beats UConn 12 - 5 in Atlanta

Atlanta, GA: Led by an outstanding defensive effort, # 23 Georgia Tech (5-2) defeated the visiting Connecticut Huskies from the Pioneer Collegiate Lacrosse League by 7 goals in Atlanta. For the second game in a row, the Jackets used an explosive 2nd quarter to secure the victory.

In their first contest of the season, UConn played aggressively in the first quarter. The Huskies matched the Yellow Jackets step for step and the game was tied at 3 goals apiece at the end of the 1st stanza.

UConn was tagged with an illegal stick penalty to open the 2nd quarter. The Huskies would kill most of the 3-minute penalty, before yielding 4 consecutive goals. Penalties plagued the UConn in the second period as the Huskies amassed 5 personal fouls. Georgia Tech led 7-3 at the half.

Both teams exchanged two goals apiece in the 3rd quarter. Tech enjoyed a seemingly comfortable 4-goal lead (9-5) at the end of the third. The 4th quarter belonged to the Georgia Tech as the Yellow Jackets piled on 3 additional goals in the final period.

Junior attackman Gary Bridges (Clements HS; Sugar Land, TX) led the scoring for Georgia Tech with 4 points (3 g, 1 a). University of Connecticut’s Brian Young (St. John’s Prep, Beverly, MA) scored two goals to lead the scoring for the Huskies.

Third year UConn Head Coach Tim Davis discussed his team’s effort following the game and he looked forward to the rest of the Spring Break trip down South. “I think our lack of practicing and playing outside started to show in the rest of the game. Our transition game was terrible and our guys had trouble settling the ball. But overall, I thought our guys played well for the first time out on the field this spring. Nick Borden played a great game in the nets for us. He made some big saves."

"We will see some high quality games down here (on this trip). Hopefully playing this high level of competition will help us out in our regular season back home” said Davis.

Georgia Tech Head Coach Ken Lovic noted of his team’s performance. "It was a good effort by the guys today, especially in the second half. UConn came out strong. It was obvious that this was their first game for the year. Our defense did a very solid job again today."

Spring Break Trip Recap

UConn completed their spring break trip, going 1-2 in the south. The Huskies traveled south without ever seeing a field for practice due to the relentless Northeastern weather. In summary, the Huskies were plagued by penalties, a poor transition game, and an undisciplined offense, but got great play from their close defensemen and goalies.

"These are things we need to work on," says Coach Davis. "I am not disappointed in their play at all. I expected us to have these problems, and I am glad we escaped with a victory down there. All of the teams we saw were quality teams. We learned a lot by playing them, and I think this will help us immensely in preparing for our conference schedule. The players and fans should not be saddened from these losses. Even in our losses, the games were close at half time. It was the little things; clears, sloppy sticks, uncontrolled checks, and poor communication which led to our downfall. We will work on these aspects of our game, and will be prepared for the other quality opponents we will face this season."

UConn Men's Lacrosse team suffered its second loss of the season to VA Tech in the final game of their trip down south. UConn surprised the Hokies by only giving up three goals in the first half. However, the young Huskies backs were broken as Tech got two chance goals, while the Huskies hit the pipes several times.

The Huskies got their first win of the season after completely dominating North Carolina State in every aspect except for the score. The Huskies controlled the tempo of the game, but once again penalties kept the game close. UConn eventually pulled away and ended up winning 7-5

Huskies Prepare for 2003 Season

(Storrs, CT) The Huskies have been practicing for weeks in order to prepare for the impending spring season. Things have been really tough though. With what seems to be record breaking snowfalls, the Huskies have not yet seen a field. They have been practicing indoors in the Greer Gym in the UConn field house. Coach Davis is hoping the transition onto a field will be smooth.

As Davis explains, "I am not worried about teams from the Northeast, it is the teams we will face down south on spring break that are the problem. Those teams have not had these weather problems. With these teams playing 5 or 6 games before our first, I am afraid they might jump out to early leads against. We have a very young team this year. Some of these sophomores will have to step up and take on the responsibilities of a junior of senior. The freshman might be shocked at the speed and high level of competition of the USLIA. The teams we will face on spring break are all very good teams. The team will be physically ready, however, in order to win, we must mentally outplay teams."

Coach Mitchell added, "Practicing indoors has been great, and I thank the Department of Recreation for the field time, but there is no substitute for outdoor practices. Drills, walkthroughs, and scrimmages are larger, wider, and harder outdoors on grass. We will see if our conditioning will hold up on a regulation field in the south. Defensively I expect we will be solid as we have been in the past. This year however we come with a more organized offense which should pose a formidable threat to our opponents. I think the experience gained from the trip down south will strengthen us in the regular season, and on our way to a winning season.."

Connecticut Huskies Gear to Improve on Last Year's Season

As the 2003 spring season of the UCONN men's lacrosse team fast approaches, the team is gearing up to improve on last year's season. The 2002 season brought the team much success, going 12-7 overall, however Coach Davis feels there is much room for improvement. The team was dominant on the defensive side all year, allowing a stingy 6.0 GA per game, yet only could manage to score 8.3 GF per game.

"The games were just too close. The offense would allow less talented teams to hang in the game. We relied way too much on our defense," explained Coach Davis. "This year, we must put teams away fast."

This year, Connecticut has reduced the number of games it will play, but raised the caliber. The team will travel south to Atlanta during Spring Break. On the road, the team will face some great competition, including 25th ranked Georgia Tech, North Carolina State, and then finishing up at 10th ranked Virginia Tech. These teams are deep in their roster lines and very fast, so they look to give UConn a high level of competition to step up to in the first week of play for the team.

From then, the team should be game hardened and ready for the Pioneer League regular season. UConn will face the likes of Boston College, Stonehill College, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, University of Boston University, and many more. The team will play 14 regular season games.

The three games Coach Davis has circled on the calendar are Bridgewater State College, University of Rhode Island, and the University of New Hampshire. Each of these teams beat UConn last year, including a loss to UNH in the Pioneer League Championships.

"To get to St. Louis, we are going to have to get by these teams," says Davis. "This year, I believe we have the means to do it."

The defense is as strong, if not stronger then ever. With returning goalies Nick Borden and John Palazzo backed by two more promising freshman goalies, the goal will not be a problem. The team suffered a big loss with the graduation of Captain Jack Pirina on defense, however Captains Jon Dahlquist and Sean Manley are back to anchor the defense. Coach Davis expects great things from his freshman defense crop as well, including Paul Boyd, Matt Brady, and Pat Higgins.

The midfield was devastated by the graduation of Captain Chris Sidwa. Sidwa was not only the leading scorer of the team, but he was the leader of the offense. Captain Dave Salemme needs to step up huge this year, and needs help from other veterans Jeff Anderson, Ryan Gardrvits, and Scott Copertino. UConn got a great freshman crop of middies this year as well. Coach Davis will be looking for immediate contributions from Jake Gerson, George Rivera, and Keith Amann.

The majority of the scoring will come from the attack this year. With John Bonetti abroad this year, the attack opens up for some new blood to step in.

"Right now, the team does not have a starting attack," explains Davis. "We will see in the preseason who deserves the starting roles."

Overall, UConn is looking to have a great season. With some work, the team will qualify for the Pioneer League Playoffs, and hopefully win a trip to St. Louis to compete for the national title.

Huskies Announce 2003 Schedule

(Storrs, CT) UConn is proud to announce its 2003 Spring schedule. UConn has taken on a very difficult schedule, with only one goal in mind, St. Louis.

The Huskies will start their season with a challenging spring break trip down south. Here, UConn will play Ga. Tech, NC State and Va. Tech. "These teams are going to be a good early test for the Huskies," explains Coach Davis. "Each of these teams are deep and skilled. They will be capable of putting UConn away early if we take them lightly. We will have to work extra hard in the preseason."

Once back, the Huskies will have their conference schedule, including UNH, URI, BU, and BC. The Huskies plan on qualifying for the league tournament in hopes to earn a birth to the national tournament in St. Louis.

UConn Finishes Season with Loss in League Championship

The UConn Men's Lacrosse team marched to the PCLL Championship game, only to be stopped a game short of a trip to St. Louis for the USLIA championships. On April 26th UConn beat a tough Stonehill team 8-5, and the following day stunned a Bridgewater St squad 10-7. However, the young UConn team ran out of gas and was outmatched by the deep and talented UNH team 10-4. UNH went on to the USLIA championship were they went 1-2.

UConn to attend 2001 Hokie Shootout

The Virginia Tech Hokies will be hosting their first annual Hokie Shootout this Saturday and Sunday, November 3rd and 4th. Participating teams in the Hokie Shootout include the SELC rival Tennessee Vols, Buffalo and Illinois from the CCLA, and four teams in the NCLL, the Virginia club, Maryland club, West Virginia club, and UConn club teams. The tournament will mark the end of Virginia Tech’s 2001 fall ball season.

The Hokies have impressed teams this fall, traveling to Lynchburg, VA for their fall tournament and beating two Division 2 varsity teams Greensboro College (15-2) and Catawba College (6-5). That same weekend VT also traveled to VMI to play two games. They beat Division 2 varsity Shenandoah University (13-2). Then came their biggest game of the weekend, against Division 1 varsity VMI. The score was tied 2-2 at the end of the first quarter, and this became a trend, ending halftime in a 4-4 tie, and ending the third quarter knotted at 6-6. Virginia Tech quickly went up 8-6 at the beginning of the fourth quarter, only to see VMI come back and score the next three goals to win the game.

After two weeks of rest, the Hokies will begin their home tournament squaring up against the UConn Huskies, a team they know little about. Other first round matches include Maryland vs. Buffalo, Tennessee vs. West Virginia, and Illinois vs. Virginia. The winners will go on to play in the semi finals, while the losers will be competing in their own bracket.

***This is the second installment of the Pioneer League Coaches interview***

Recently we had a chance to sit down with University of Connecticut head coach Tim Davis and get his thoughts on the season at hand as well as Connecticut lacrosse. Currently Coach Davis has led his team to a 1-2 Pioneer League record, taking ranked teams New Hampshire and Rhode Island to the wire.

After playing his college days in a Connecticut uniform, Davis has taken over the head coaching reigns in Storrs this season. While a member of the Husky squad, Davis played for four years as an attack man and was awarded both Pioneer First and Second team awards.

JB: What do you think about lacrosse in the state of CT?

Coach Davis: I believe that Connecticut produces some of the best lacrosse players in the nation.

JB: Where do you see the USLIA going?

Coach Davis: I see the USLIA continuing to expand, especially on the east coast. I believe more teams are looking into joining the USLIA from our area, and the competition will grow fiercer.

JB: What do you think about having a Heisman or Tewaaraton Trohpy for the USLIA?

Coach Davis: I don’t believe this is in the near future for the USLIA. In order to have an award of this caliber, teams will need more exposure and the voters will need to be able to follow each nominee's season, not by just statistics, but also by watching how they play and handle different game situations.

JB: What are your thoughts on your team thus far?

Coach Davis: I believe my team has enormous potential. UConn has some of the best raw athletic talent I've seen in the Pioneer League, but with the weather situation, a lack of field practice has really hurt our ability to harness our potential and sharpen our team play.

JB: Although you are 1-2, you have taken to premiere teams in the Pioneer League to the wire, your thoughts on that?

Coach Davis: I am very proud of the way my team performed in our two losses vs. URI and UNH. In both games, UConn amassed around 12 penalties and looked very sloppy in the offensive side of the field. By the time we face these teams again in the playoffs, I guarantee that this will not be the case, and the Huskies will come out on top.

JB: Any closing thoughts?

Coach Davis: To the rest of the USLIA Leagues, I would just like to add that the Pioneer League, even in one year, has grown and each team is much stronger than last year. Which ever team makes it out of the PCLL tournament, I expect them to go far in the national tournament, giving the dominant teams from the south and west a run for their money.

Huskies Fall to Rhode Island in Opener

After sixteen days of rest after their spring break trip to the south, The University of Rhode Island Rams were anxious to get back on the field. Unfortunately they would not see field on Monday, as the Huskies home field had been destroyed by a weekend Rugby tournament, and team was left with nothing more than deep mud-pit with goals at each end.

The game began very slow, as both teams adjusted to the mud. The first goal came almost ten minutes into the game as Geoff Knowlten drew a double team and dished to Whitney Watts for a hard crank shot that got past the Husky goalie. URI would score again at 11:25 into the first quarter as Watts would roll away from the double team for a quick right-handed shot. UConn would answer back in transition, as Steve Colite was able to finish after a great clearing pass from the defense that left him one on one with the Ram goalie. The first quarter would end with the Rams leading 2-1.

The UConn defense tightened up and would hold the Rams scoreless in the second quarter. The Huskies tied the game at 4:23 in the second as Chris Sidwa found Steve Colite on the crease for his second goal of the game. The teams went to the half knotted at two.

The third quarter would begin just as slow as the two previous quarters, as both high powered offenses were stagnated by the mud. The Rams would open the second half scoring at 5:28 in the third as Sean Lindberg passed to Mike Jacobs who was left open on the crease. Lindberg would then get a goal himself on a fast break assist from Whitney Watts. The Rams would get their biggest lead of the game at 5-2, when Watts again scored unassisted. The teams would match goals for the rest of the third quarter, which ended with the Rams ahead 6-3.

The Huskies came out fired up for the fourth quarter and got themselves back into the game with three quick goals. The first goal came on an extra man opportunity as Steve Colite found Matt Whitneben on the left side of the goal for a quick shot. The second goal was a great individual effort by Colite who was hit on the crease and was somehow able to get the shot off anyway. The tying goal came on the ensuing face off as a blown fast break led to Tim Davis kicking the ball in for the goal. The Rams would answer though to regain the lead twenty seconds later as Whitney Watts found Freshman Shawn McCormick for the quick stick goal. The Huskies were not done yet as they re-tied the game at 5:33 into the quarter. The Rams re-captured the lead as Watts scored two more unassisted goals, giving them a 9-7 lead. The resilient Huskies would not go away though as Tim Davis made it a one goal game with 50 seconds remaining. The Huskies won the ensuing face-off but the Rams defense stepped up and was able to get the ball back to the offensive end of the field, where they iced the game on feed from Tony Axtmann to Sean Lindberg for the goal.

"I was very pleased with the play of the defense, in those conditions they needed to step up and they did. They are playing much better this year as a team, and they have handled a lot of difficult situations this year." Said Head Coach Charles Arthur. The defense of Matt Rubin, Paul Decarlo, and Michael Lord was led by the play of goal keeper John Melius who had 14 saves.

2001 PCLL Preview

There is old saying in that says "To be the best, you have to beat the best." This statement could not be more true for the 2001 Pioneer League, as every team in the league is out to not only prove that they are the number one team, but that they play the best lacrosse in the Northeast area.

After a successful 2000 season, the Pioneer League is ready to step it up and compete with the big dogs of the USLIA. Having increased the number of teams in the league as well from eight to nine, with the joining of New York University as a full member and thus gives the league the highest number of teams in its 15 year history.

Due to the size and anticipated growth, the league has decided to break down into three divisions. In the Pioneer North we will see University of New Hampshire, Northeastern University and Boston University. The Pioneer Central will pair the Rams of Rhode Island, Chieftains of Stonehill and Bears of Bridgewater State against one and other. The league is rounded out by the Pioneer South division, which features New York University, United States Coast Guard Academy and the University of Connecticut.

As for the format of the new alignment; all three teams in each division will play each other twice, once at home and once away, while playing teams in other divisions only once. The top finishers in each of the three divisions will receive automatic playoff bids while other teams will have to gain entry through a wild card berth.

The league will also be unveiling its new website in February at www.PioneerLacrosse.com. Included will be game summaries, standings, league polls, team information and much more. Fans and players alike will be able to stay atop of all the league happenings throughout the season.

Since last years championship game between Boston University and University of New Hampshire, in which UNH pulled out the 16-9 win on a late second half surge, every team has been raring to go. This seasons looks to be a tight one for all with no one team above the other.

"UNH did a great job representing us in St. Louis and they proved that a Pioneer League team could compete with the other USLIA teams, I hope that whoever represents our league this year will look to further that success," Pioneer League Director Charles Arthur said.

Although looking forward to getting underway this season, Arthur is very happy with last years results as well. "Last season was great for our league as it gave all of the teams a real goal for the season and really gave a lot more meaning to winning the league championship," Arthur continued. "Having traveled to Atlanta to play some SELC teams and to the national championships in St. Louis, I was able to really see a level of play that far surpassed my expectations."

Stonehill College Head Coach Anthony Karpouzis echoed Arthur's feelings stating that "I really can't say enough about how organized we have become, with all of the rules and guidelines that have been set, it's obvious that the Pioneer League will not accept any teams that aren't serious about lacrosse,"; Karpouzis said. "There aren't just one or two good teams in this league anymore; everyone is playing for the same thing, a league championship and a bid to the national championship.

After an impressive undefeated season and trip to St. Louis, the University of New Hampshire Wildcats are out to repeat as Pioneer League Champions, however standing in their way are eight other teams who would all love nothing more than a trip to the Anheuser-Busch Sports Centre themselves .

With a Pioneer record three teams appearing in the USLIA Top 25 Pre-season Poll, #14 UNH, #24 URI, and #25 BU, the entire Pioneer league certainly means business this season.

"There is no such thing as an easy win in the Pioneer League anymore; the competition is too tough,"; Karpouzis stated. On October 18, 2000 the Pioneer League announced its 2001 Pre-season poll and showed just how close the competition really is.

Although they have lost their starting attack, UNH sits atop of the poll. They will once again have a very deep squad with numbers reaching into the forties or fifties. With two very good midfielders in Todd Koss and Brad Deans returning, and the fact that the team has only lost a total of two games in their three years, UNH looks once again to be a tough competitor. Those three successful seasons however come under the leadership of head coach Nate Fitch, who has left to pursue career opportunities. If the Wildcats can work their magic once again then look for UNH to be returning to St. Louis in May.

Although in first place for now UNH will surely be tested as both BU and URI are tied for second place, falling only three points shy of the Wildcats.

Boston University who will also have a coaching change as Dan Morris, who served as an assistant for three years, moves up to take over as head coach. The Terriers will return a solid attack and midfield but lose their two top defensemen. Look for the Terriers to really step up in 2001 and possibly run their way right into St. Louis.

For Rhode Island their season looks to be filled with good news/ bad news situations. Good news: the Rams return a solid core of players on attack and midfield. Bad news: The loss of Brian Farren makes for a young defensive team Good news: The Rams boast last years scoring leader and league MVP in Whitney Watts. Bad news: All of the games versus higher ranked teams occur on the road. If the Rams can come together and win the tough ones in someone else's backyard, than look out for Rhody in 2001.

UCONN who over the past few years has proved to always be a tough team, will return a solid nucleus of players with a lot of talent. If they can bring it together and play as a team, they will be tough to beat and may wind up on a flight to St. Louis.

Despite a regular season record of three wins and four losses in Pioneer League play, the Chieftains took the league champions (UNH) almost to the wire in the Pioneer League semi-finals last year. Stonehill will start this 2001 season right where they left off, hungry and ready to go. Although starting lower in the brackets, the Chieftains return a solid midfield, but lose All league Goalie Jeffrey Knapp. If the hole at goalie can be filled and the attack stays strong then expect to see Stonehill playing in May.

The Huskies of Northeastern are ready to show that they not only have supremacy in Boston, but in the entire league as well. With an experienced coach in 1999 graduate Tyler Smith, the team will look to get to the top and give every a team a run for their money in not just the Pioneer but the entire USLIA in May.

Bridgwater State returns for another season of top notch lacrosse. Although finishing up last season with only one win, the Bears return most of their 2000 roster, which will result in a team rich in experience and depth. If coach Eric Lobo and his troops can step it up and continue to come together than look for Bridgewater to be booking tickets on a flight to St. Louis.

After a disappointing winless season, the US Coast Guard Academy looks to bounce back and get back on track. An early game on March 24th, 2001 with the Rams of URI will let them know exactly where they stand against the higher seeded teams in the league. The Bears will look to regain their 1999 championship and compete in the national championship.

After serving a probationary season last year, NYU joins the league this spring. Although ranked last, the Violets have played every team in the league and are ready to show that Manhattan can play lacrosse. With a strong and experienced midfield, NYU will look to make it all the way to St. Louis in this thier expansion year.

With many teams traveling into other regions of the country to do battle with other USLIA teams, the Pioneer League is on a quest to prove that they can in fact play with the best that the USLIA has to offer. So come March 24, 2001 when the Pioneer League officially opens its league play, up until the championship game on April 29th at the US Coast Guard Academy, fans can expect to see hard hitting and competitive lacrosse played at its best.
